BISMARCK, N.D. - One of North Dakota National Guard's leaders that began his military career in 1973 was promoted to colonel Feb. 11 at Raymond J. Bohn Armory. Family members, friends, retirees and fellow Guardsmen gathered to celebrate the promotion of Gary Christianson.

"I deployed with Gary Christianson to Kosovo and learned first-hand how valuable his dedication and work ethic is to the organization," said Brig.
Gen. Alan Dohrmann, North Dakota deputy adjutant general, who presided over the ceremony. "His expertise will continue to keep Guard members on the cutting edge of technology."

Christianson recently returned from Kosovo, where he served as director of information technology where he served in support of the 2,200-strong multi-national taskforce. He brought that experience back to North Dakota and now is in charge of information technology for the North Dakota National Guard.

Christianson thanked the guests present and praised his Family for supporting him during his career and enduring the many absences that accompany military duty.

"I value the friendships I've made and the experience I've gained within the National Guard during my years of service, and I thank you for promoting me to this rank," said Christianson. "I look forward to continuing my career in the North Dakota National Guard."

Christianson served in the Navy from 1973-75, then joined the U.S. Navy Reserve until 1977, before enlisting in the North Dakota Army National Guard in Grand Forks as a communications specialist. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in 1987 and currently assigned as the director for Information Technology for the North Dakota National Guard.

Christianson's military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Kosovo Campaign Medal.

Christianson is married to the former Cheryle Asperheim of Tolna, N.D., a retired Chief Warrant Officer. They reside in Bismarck, N.D., and have two children.
