CHANTHABURI PROVINCE, Kingdom of Thailand – In the classrooms of the Don Maung Rae School, military medical personnel set up a make-shift care facility to treat Thai locals during the first medical civic actions project of Exercise Cobra Gold 2011 here Feb. 5.

Humanitarian and civic assistance projects conducted by Thailand, Republic of Singapore, Japan, Republic of Indonesia, Republic of Korea and the U.S. armed forces improve quality of life in the remote locations visited and allow military personnel to perfect the skills needed for future humanitarian assistance deployments.

The doctors, dentists, and veterinarians of the Combined Joint Civic Military Operations Task Force provide medical treatment to isolated rural locations to build military-community relationships as well as increase general welfare throughout the region.

“When I was a little girl, military doctors came and helped me,” said Rachanee Paiingchob, a local native. “This year I brought my daughter knowing that the soldiers would help.”

During the project, service member from differing national backgrounds worked side-by-side.

“It feels good to work along with the other nations’ service members,” said Staff Sgt. Suhaiu Chemet, a Perak, Malaysia, native and paramedic with the Angloatan Tentera Naval Hospital. “I will practice the techniques I learn from the Americans and Thais when I return to my home country.”

As waiting lines for treatment grew, local medical specialists from nearby practices volunteered their skills to speed up the treatment process.

“You can see that our hosts truly appreciate what we are doing here,” said U.S. Army Maj. Mark Taum, a Kailua, Hawaii, native and civil affairs team leader with the U.S. Army's 322nd Civil Affairs Brigade, 351st Civil Affairs Command, Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command, based out of Honolulu.

Medical civic assistance projects are scheduled to take place in three different regions of Thailand at eight other sites.

“We are a rolling medical team,” said Lt. Kayreen Gucciardo, a Hillsboro, Ore., native and planning operations intelligence officer with 3rd Dental Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force. “This team is going to make a large impact across the nation for the people and their families.”
