NORFOLK, Va. – The staff of Commander, U.S. Second Fleet rolled up their sleeves to save a life, Feb. 7, to support the Armed Services Blood Program.
The ASBP provides quality blood products for service members and their families in both peace and war. As a joint operation among the military services (Army, Navy, Air Force), the ASBP collects, processes, stores, distributes, and transfuses blood worldwide.
According to Petty Officer 1st Class Sikheem Duncan, the C2F First Class Petty Officers Association set up the event because it directly supports our military family.
“We set this up through the Armed Services Blood Program because it directly supports the Armed Forces and their families, with 75 percent of the blood going to the front lines.”
Thirty-five military members signed up to give blood, but not everyone was able to donate due to restrictions in place to protect the blood supply. Restrictions apply to members who have deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Horn of Africa, or Haiti, donated blood within eight weeks, had a piercing, brand or tattoo within 12 months, or tested positive for HIV are not able to donate blood.
With these precautions in place, military members are encouraged to donate when possible because one pint of blood can save three lives.
“One day I might need to receive blood, and it will be someone like me that will save my life,” said Chief Operations Specialist Sean Gravesande.
And because of the initiative of the Chiefs-in-Training of the Second Fleet FCPOA, the military’s supply has increased, making it possible to make a difference in a special way.
“Above and beyond replenishing the inventory of blood products in the supply chain, our volunteer donors are giving the “gift of life” to our fellow service members assigned to the tip of the spear,” said Fleet Master Chief for Second Fleet Glenn Mallo. “And that in itself makes me proud to be a part of such a great staff.”
