CHANTHABURI, Kingdom of Thailand – Military medical personnel with the Combined Joint Civic Military Operations Task Force gathered for an opening conference Feb. 3, 2011, at Chanthaburi, Kingdom of Thailand, as part of the humanitarian and civic assistance portion of Exercise Cobra Gold 2011.
The medical, dental and veterinary civic actions program team will include military medical personnel from Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Republic of Korea, Malaysia and the U.S.
The MDVCAP team is scheduled to travel to nine locations and is estimated to affect more than 10,000 people throughout Thailand, according to U.S. Navy Cmdr. Steven Kriss, group surgeon, Headquarters Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 37, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, and officer-in-charge of the medical civic assistance projects during Cobra Gold '11.
“We’re doing something different this year,” said Col. Jay Hatton, a Widow Oak, Texas, native, commanding officer of CLR-3, 3rd MLG, and deputy commander of the task force during Cobra Gold 2011. “While members of the MDV(CAP) team are treating patients at one site, team members will go ahead and setup for the next project to reach them quicker in the time given.”
The team’s daily goal is to treat 1,000 people every day at each site, according to Petty Officer 2nd Class Erica Smith, a Smithfield, R.I., native and pharmacy technician with Combat Logistics Regiment 3, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary
Force.
During the MDVCAP, service members will work together to treat local communities suffering from illnesses such as malaria, dengue fever and tuberculosis as well as hand out eyeglasses.
“This is my first time being a part of an exercise like this, and I can already feel it’s going to be a success,” said Smith.
