BISMARCK, N.D. — One of North Dakota National Guard’s leaders with more than 30 years of service was promoted to colonel Feb. 4 at Raymond J. Bohn Armory. Family members, friends and fellow Guardsmen gathered to celebrate the promotion of Darcie Handt.

“Darcie Handt has had a tremendous impact on the North Dakota National Guard throughout his career,” said Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general, who presided over the ceremony. “He has been a driving force in developing sound maintenance and logistics initiatives and programs. I am confident that he’ll continue to do outstanding work in his new rank.”

Handt thanked the guests present and praised his family for supporting him during his career and enduring the many absences that accompany military duty without complaint.

"I value the friendships I've made within the National Guard during my years of service, and I thank you for promoting me to this rank”, said Handt. “I won't let you down."

Handt enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard in his hometown of Valley City, N.D., in 1979 as a mechanic. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in 1989 and subsequently served in various key positions within the North Dakota Army National Guard, to include: Deputy Chief of Staff for Recruiting and Retention, Director of Maintenance , Commander of the Valley City based 231st Brigade Support Battalion, and as Director of Logistics. Recently he returned from a year-long deployment to Kosovo where he served as the logistics officer for 141st Manueaver Enhancement Brigade. He is currently assigned as the deputy for the United States Property and Fiscal Office at Fraine Barracks.

Handt military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He is also the recipient of the North Dakota Army National Guard Recruiting Excellence Badge.

Handt is married to the former Elizabeth (Beth) Johnson of Mandan, N.D. They are both members of the North Dakota Army National Guard and reside in Bismarck with their three children.
