    PAKTYA, Afghanistan – Service members at Forward Operating Base Lightning recently held their second semi-annual bench press competition.

    Organizers partnered with the Fluor Corporation to host the event.

    “We did this to lift morale,” said U.S Army Staff Sgt. Reginald King of Horry, S.C. “All of my guys lift.”

    Male service members were divided into three categories based on weight class: light, medium and heavy. Female service members competed in their own division.

    U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Monica Danner of Muscatina, Iowa, won the ladies competition by pressing 90 pounds. She entered the competition at the last minute, but was still able to beat her competition.

    U.S. Army Pvt. 1st Class Richard Greer of Walnut, Idaho, also competed.

    “I always wanted to compete in something like this, but I’m from a small town without organized weight lifting,” said Greer. “It’s my first time back in the gym in a few years.”

    Mediumweight-class winner, U.S. Army Sgt. Steaderick Diggins of Sawyerville, Ala., joined the competition for his troops.

    “I wanted to show [my troops] that they can do anything they set their minds to,” said Higgins after winning his class by bench pressing 405 pounds.

    In addition to Danner and Diggins were, U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Brian McFarland of Richmond, Calif., who won in the in the lightweight division by pressing 290 pounds and men’s heavyweight division winner, U.S. Army Sgt. Shaun Gibb of Leesville, La., who pressed 430 pounds.
