GHAZNI PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Task Force White Eagle soldiers from Forward Operating Base Vulcan taught a driving course for Afghan National Army soldiers from Ghazni garrison headquarters and 3rd Infantry Brigade, 203rd Corps, Afghan National Army, Jan. 3-26.

The goal of the course was to enhance ANA soldiers’ driving and vehicle maintenance skills.

The instruction included how to maintain and run two vehicles: a special-purpose forklift and Humvee. Training is divided into two subgroups, one for each type of vehicle. After a sufficient mastery of skills by the subgroup, the students move on to the next vehicle.

It was the first opportunity to drive a vehicle for some of Afghan soldiers. “When I sat down on the vehicle, I thought that I [wouldn’t get it],” said ANA Pvt. Mohammad Aiwaz, course participant. “But slowly I began to operate it and I feel more confident behind the forklift wheel.”

The course will enable the Afghan soldiers to effectively use military equipment, and that will improve the daily functioning of their base.

Though there are challenges in teaching some of the soldiers how to operate the vehicles, the training has been effective, said Polish Army Warrant Officer Zbigniew Tańczyk, TF White Eagle course leader. “There is the progress from one day to the next one. As an instructor, I am pleased that the group does not give up and want to learn.”

To complete the course, the soldiers were required to pass an exam where they had to demonstrate skills learned during the course.

The course will be offered again in February, as well as computer and English classes.
