FORT BELVOIR, Va. -- As the Defense Department begins to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, some of the items America loaned to one of its allies are being retired with the help of the Defense Logistics Agency.
The DLA Disposition Services site in Bangkok, Thailand, is aiding the Joint United States Military Advisory Group Thailand and the Thai government with the final disposition of property granted to Thailand’s government and armed forces more than 30 years ago. According to Prapun Jantawee, DLA Disposition Services’ Bangkok site manager, most of the property is military trucks, tractors, generators, forklift trucks, etc., that were provided to Thai forces through the Military Assistance Program.
Jantawee hosted a Jan. 11 visit by Maj. Joshua O. Maskovich, the U.S. Air Force Security Assistance Division director with the advisory group, and Vanida Boosamund, an assistant with the Foreign Military Sales, Air Force Security Assistance Division, to inspect property at Donmuang Air Base. The Royal Thai Air Force’s control property officer, Lt. Col. Thawil Ngamkham, presented two trucks to an inspection team. Property that requires mutilation or demilitarization will be processed by the Thai armed forces before being sold as scrap by DLA Disposition Services.
“We only receive property in place because DLA Disposition Services in Bangkok has only one room and a one-man local office,” Jantawee said, “so there is no shipment back to the United States.”
Besides the Vietnam-era property, Jantawee is also overseeing the disposition of property from the Modification and Rebuild Shop at the Ordnance directorate at Pathumthani as well as the Supply Division in the Royal Thai Army’s Directorate of Sciences in Bangkok. The newer property includes items from the advisory group and the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical and Sciences such as office computers, furniture, and other office appliances. Jantawee said that all usable property will be sold locally in Thailand. Altogether, 342 line items were received.
