ZABUL, Afghanistan - The Afghan National Army celebrated a momentous occasion Jan. 13 at Forward Operating Base Eagle when the Afghan Army graduated more than 20 students taught completely by Afghan non-commissioned officer instructors.
Throughout their deployment to Zabul province, Troopers from 2nd Squadron of the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment are conducting the ANA Academy course to give their Afghan counterparts a better understanding of how U.S. and coalition forces operate in terms of tactics, techniques and procedures. As they were teaching each class, exceptional ANA soldiers were selected to receive additional training to become instructors.
“The instructors stepped up and took the lead in teaching everything,” said Sgt. Ken Huguley, an ANA Academy instructor from 2 SCR. “We were behind the scene mentors making sure they checked the blocks and covered everything.”
According to Huguley, each ANA instructor was given thorough training on how to teach each class.
“We broke each lesson down to the basics for them in order to give them a good foundation,” he said. “Once we did that the instructors picked it up quickly.
Huguley also mentioned that if an instructor was unclear about how to teach a class, they asked their mentors for help.
Similar to the U.S. forces NCO Academy program, the ANA Academy teaches NCOs various troop leading skills, battle drills, room clearing and other techniques used by soldiers in the course of their mission.
