KABUL, Afghanistan – A joint Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force operation targeted a mid-level Taliban leader in Nawah-ye Barakzai District, Helmand province, yesterday.

Multiple intelligence reports and tips from local citizens led the force to a compound associated with the improvised explosive device and suicide attack facilitator.

As the force arrived at the compound, Afghan security forces called-out to the occupants to allow them to exit the building peacefully. One man, two women and three children exited the building peacefully. The women and children were protected and after questioning, the man was detained.

As the force moved towards a small building within the compound, a man armed with an automatic weapon moved in their direction, threatening the force. He posed a threat to the patrol and was killed.

Two additional men were detained as the security force continued to search the compound. The detainees were taken in for processing and further questioning.
