KABUL, Afghanistan – Senior Afghan civil and military leaders met in a conference at Afghan National Army Camp Shaheen Jan. 2 to outline the way forward in security, governance and socio-economic development in northern Afghanistan.

Leaders were informed and briefed on Operation Naiad Omid 1390 by planners from Afghan and Regional Command North military offices. Supported by International Security Assistance Force, Op Omid 1390, which means “hope” in Dari, provides guidance from the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Afghan national security forces in order to achieve security, governance and socio-economic development goals and milestones for the next 18 to 24 months.

“Combined Task Force North will be even more confident to secure northern Afghanistan as a result of Op Omid 1390,” said Afghan army Brig. Gen. Zalmay Wesa, commander, ANA 209th Corps, and host of the conference.

The conference commenced with a reading from the Quran and Afghanistan’s national anthem, followed by an overview of Op Omid 1390 and how it will be implemented by Combined Team North’s various government and security partners.

Afghan Chief of ANA Gen. Sher Karimi, Afghan Deputy Minister of the Interior Lt. Gen. Abdul Rahman, and many other GIRoA and ANSF representatives from Kabul attended. The meeting was concluded with remarks from the various participating organization’s leaders.

U.S. Army Lt. Gen. David M. Rodriguez, commander, ISAF Joint Command, highlighted the progress made by GIRoA and ANSF in his remarks.

“We continue to get better and better,” said Rodriguez. “I appreciate your partnership and team work. It is important to continue supporting Afghan leaders, government and the people so they may achieve a deserved peace and prosperity.”

The necessity for joint-cooperation between Afghans and ISAF was stressed by German Army Maj. Gen. Hans-Werner Fritz, commander, ISAF RC-North, at the conclusion of the conference.

“We’re a good team,” said Fritz. “Our partnership with ANSF is continuously improving. We are now acting as a one, combined team north. Our common effort can only be achieved with our ANSF partners and the Afghan people. I am convinced we can reach our goals.”
