    Forces target Taliban leader involved in strike against Afghan forces

    KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan and coalition forces targeted senior leaders of the Taliban and Haqqani Network detaining several suspected insurgents during operations in Ghazni and Khost provinces yesterday.

    In Ghazni province, Afghan and coalition forces targeted the Taliban leader for Muqer District detaining one suspected insurgent during a joint security operation.

    The Taliban leader for Muqer District has direct connections with Taliban leadership and shadow governors in the area. He was also involved with the complex suicide attack in Kabul City Dec. 19 that killed four Afghan National Army soldiers and wounded several Afghan National Security Forces personnel.

    Security forces followed leads to a series of buildings in the Muqer District. Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search of the compound. One suspected insurgent was detained after initial questioning.

    In Khost province, Afghan and coalition forces targeted a senior Haqqani Network leader operating in the Terayzai district detaining several suspected insurgents.

    The Haqqani Network leader facilitates the movement of improvised explosive device materials and coordinates IED emplacement in Terayzai district. He has direct contact with Pakistan-based Haqqani Network leaders.

    Security forces followed intelligence reports to a compound in Sabari district to search for the Haqqani Network leader. Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the compounds peacefully before the security force cleared and secured the compound. After initial questioning at the scene, the security force detained several suspected insurgents.

    The security forces protected women and children and did not fire their weapons during these operations.
