    Story by Cpl. Joshua Hines

    II Marine Expeditionary Force

MUSA QAL’EH, Helmand province, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army soldiers with 3rd Kandak, 2nd Brigade, 215th Corps, and the Afghan Uniformed Police conducted a raid of the Khatki bazaar, supported by Marines and sailors of 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 2, during Operation Khas Jirap in Musa Qal’eh, Dec. 23, 2010.

After receiving information that the Khatki bazaar was being used as a safe haven for Taliban fighters, as well as supplying them with income and materials to create improvised explosive devices, the ANA and AUP developed a plan to interdict the Taliban forces operating in the area.

“From start to finish, this operation was Afghan led. They planned the operation and executed those plans flawlessly,” said Capt. Marc Bullock, officer in charge of the Police Advisory Team, with 1st Bn., 8th Marines.

The morning of Dec. 23, Afghan soldiers surrounded the bazaar, while the Afghan police began a meticulous search for signs of illicit drugs, IED making materials and other illegal contraband. During the search, enemy combatants opened fire on Afghan National Security Forces, who then returned fire and drove the enemy from the bazaar.

“I believe the operation was a fantastic success,” said Maj. Christopher Reynolds, team leader for the Embedded Advisory Team, with 1st Bn., 8th Marines. “The operation removed a large amount of IED making materials from Taliban hands and sent a message to the Taliban that they’re not safe, even in the Khatki bazaar. It also helped put a wedge between the Taliban and the Afghan people by building the people’s confidence in the Afghan National Security Forces.”
