    KABUL, Afghanistan – Several insurgents were killed and others detained by Afghan national security and International Security Assistance Forces during separate clearing operations in eastern and southern Afghanistan, Dec. 30.

    In Zharay district, Kandahar province, an ISAF patrol spotted two insurgents emplacing an improvised explosive device. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces called for air support. The air weapons team on scene engaged the enemy position, killing one insurgent. Afterwards, moving towards the enemy position, ground forces discovered a large drug cache and detained two suspected insurgents found in possession of drugs. The cache consisted of 2,000 pounds (907 kilograms) of hashish and marijuana.

    In Nangarhar province, an ISAF patrol discovered a weapons, IED-making materials and drugs cache in Khugyani district. The cache consisted of one AK-47, 150 7.62 mm rounds, one grenade, 1,543 pounds (700 kg) of urea nitrate and two pounds (1 kg) of hashish. Coalition forces also detained several suspected insurgents related to the cache.

    An Afghan national security forces and ISAF patrol declared an imminent threat observing two insurgents with weapons on motorcycles in Ghazni district, Ghazni province. After gaining positive identification, combined forces engaged the enemy position with small arms fire, killing two insurgents.

    Also today, Afghan national security forces and ISAF discovered several caches in eastern and southern Afghanistan.

    In Helmand, Logar and Uruzgan provinces, Afghan national security forces and ISAF patrols found five weapons and improvised explosive device component caches in Sangin, Tarin Kot, Deh Rawud and Pul-e Alam districts during separate clearing operations. The weapon caches consisted of 29 rocket-propelled grenades, 10 RPG warheads and boosters, four grenades, one rifle, one AK-47, one machine-gun, eight full AK-47 magazines, 400 7.62 mm rounds, seven 85 mm mortar rounds, 23 82 mm mortar rounds and three 107 mm rockets.

    The IED making components consisted of 37 pressure plates, 14 radio-command devices, 55 pounds (25 kg) of homemade explosives and several electrical components.

    An ISAF patrol also found a large IED making chemical and weapons cache in Khugyani district, Nangarhar province consisting of 1,543 pounds (700 kg) of urea nitrate, one AK-47 and two chest racks. Coalition forces detained two suspected insurgents and will turn over the fertilizer to National Directorate of Security.

    Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the weapons clearing operations. The weapons, explosives and drugs from all provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
