CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – This holiday season service members aboard Camp Leatherneck participated in many festive events including a talent show, Christmas caroling, and holiday chapel services.

The Christmas meal, served today, was an event in itself for the service members to enjoy. Dining facility 5 was festively decorated with a Santa Claus, complete with a sled and reindeer, ice sculptures and many hand-crafted decorations.

The DFAC 5 staff prepared a full range of desserts, baked goods and food ranging from prime rib, turkey, and ham, as well as numerous other holiday dishes.

Like Thanksgiving, Camp Leatherneck senior leadership served the Christmas meal.

“I think [the meal] is great to actually give something to the troops from home,” said Staff Sgt. Robert Richardson, food service manager. “It shows the Marines that their senior leadership cares. The Marines see them serving and they see them doing something other than just their day-to-day routine, and they get a little bit of pleasure out of it.”

Even though the service members are away from home they can still take a little bit of time to enjoy themselves with their brothers and sisters-in-arms.

“The actual menu makes them relate to something from back home,” said Richardson, 37, from Richmond, Va. “So I think it’s great that it will give them a memory of Christmas.”
