CAMP ADDER, Iraq – The 3rd Advise and Assist Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, recently hosted a United States Division-South law conference at Camp Adder, Dec. 14, to bring together different legal officials from Iraqi security forces and U.S. forces.
The conference was an open forum for all parties to exchange ideas and discuss law practices and current events.
According to 1st Lt. Ahmad Majeed, legal officer, 40th Brigade, 10th Iraqi Army Division, the event was beneficial for everyone to see how two different cultures handle the same issues.
“We’ve never held anything like this before. This is the first time I’ve witnessed policemen and lawyers and soldiers coming together to exchange information and ideas,” he said.
The group discussed different aspects of law during the event, including crime scene investigation, criminal prosecution and military law.
Even though Iraq is a small country compared to the U.S., travel and communication can be a major obstacle. Having conferences such as these not only offers an open forum for discussion, but it provides an opportunity for networking, said Maj. Dan McAuliffe, deputy brigade judge advocate, 1st Army Training Support Division West, attached to 3rd AAB, 4th Inf. Div.
Based on the response and participation from this initial conference, law advisors are already looking forward to another, similar conference in the future.
“It’s always good to speak one-on-one. We really hope to do this again,” said Majeed.
