KABUL, Afghanistan – An Andar radio operator and disc jockey was well received by the people of Sini, Ghazni province when he conducted interviews and handed out radios and school supplies recently.
“The people were really excited,” said Afghan DJ Farooq. “Being on the radio is very special for them. It’s something that sets them apart from their peers within their village.”
The interviews allowed locals to express their thoughts and concerns in a public forum giving people the chance to make their voice heard regarding important matters within their village.
“I’m able to work as a mediator for these people,” said Farooq. “When they can’t get to the government, I can carry their voice for them.”
In between interviews, Farooq would give out hand-cranked radios, notebooks, school bags and pens.
A special emphasis was placed on ensuring the local teacher received numerous notebooks and pens to use during lessons.
“This mission has helped build the Afghans’ trust in the local government and allow them to be heard,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Matthew Ward, platoon leader with Company B. “We have shown the people of Andar that they have a voice and it will be heard; free of coercion, fear and oppression.”
