KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan and coalition forces killed and detained several insurgents while targeting a Taliban leader during an operation in Kunduz province Dec. 18.

The targeted individual is the Taliban leader for Imam Sahib District. He has planned attacks against government buildings, Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces with improvised explosive devices, vehicle-borne IEDs, small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades.

Intelligence reports led the security force to a compound in Imam Sahib district to search for the Taliban leader. As the security force arrived at the targeted compound they received sporadic gunfire from armed insurgents resulting in coalition forces killing several insurgents.

After the initial engagement, Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the targeted compound peacefully before the joint force cleared and secured the buildings. After initial questioning at the scene, the security force detained several suspected insurgents. The security force found multiple weapons and chest racks.

The assault force protected women and children in the compound for the duration of the search.
