MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII, Oahu – Local artist Tom “Thor” Thordarson unveiled and presented a custom painting to the Marine Aircraft Group 24’s commanding officer, that honors Marines and sailors who work with and fly the CH-53D “Sea Stallion” helicopters at noon on Dec. 17 at Officer’s Club.
The painting being presented to MAG-24 is a colorful illustration of CH-53Ds flying over a barren desert at sunset, dropping leis and other iconic Hawaiian items.
The inspiration for the painting is the contrasting idea of MAG-24’s Sea Stallion helicopters bringing Hawaii’s “Aloha Spirit” to the monochromatic desert where combat operations are most prevalent, said Thor.
"I am hoping that everyone finds these enchanted places, intriguing contraptions or playful characters I am painting now as much fun to look at, as they are for me to paint” said Thor. “Come by and share some ‘Aloha spirit’ with me and I will tell you a few magical tales.”
Thor has served as the director of Attraction Development at Universal Studios, Hollywood and then as a Disney Imagineer with his role as a director/senior concept designer.
The MAG is a unique organization within the Marine Corps. The entire Corps’ inventory of active CH-53D "Sea Stallion" helicopters is located in Hawaii.
MAG-24’s mission is to provide the Marine Air-Ground Task Force commander the finest heavy-lift, assault support of combat troops, equipment, and supplies, day or night during combat, contingencies, or peacetime operations.
