CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Coalition forces gathered to play in a volleyball tournament at Camp Shora Bak, Afghanistan Dec. 5.

The volleyball tournament was held to raise morale and create a stronger partnership between coalition forces. Participants in the volleyball tournament included U.S. Marines from 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, U.K. forces with the 2nd Force Protection Wing, Royal Air Force, Danish forces from the 2nd Armoured Battalion, Royal Danish Army, Bahraini forces from the Special Security Forces, and Afghan forces from the Afghan National Army 215th Corps.

Sgt. Scott Daniel N. Swingle, 25, a section leader with the Columbus, Ohio based 3rd Bn., 25th Marines, played in one of the volleyball games against the Bahraini SSF. The Bahrainis won that game; however, Swingle said even though they lost the game it was still a good time.

“If all the ISAF units are trying to work together this is just the next best thing to get everybody involved in doing something together,” said the Columbus, Ohio resident.

Cpl. Scott M. Welcher, 21, an airman with 2nd Force Protection Wing, Royal Air Force, echoed Swingle’s opinion saying that he had a good time and that he would definitely participate in another event like the volleyball tournament.

Welcher competed in the volleyball game between the U.K. forces and the ANA. Although the U.K. forces lost that game, Welcher said he had fun playing because it was different from his usual job and he also got the chance to meet new people.

“They absolutely creamed us,” Welcher said. “It was quite embarrassing really, we don’t really have a clue about volleyball and obviously they knew what they were doing. It was just about fun and a little bit of competition, but it just keeps you going and keeps morale up.”

Azrat Ali, 28, from Nangarhar province, with the ANA 215th Corps, participated in the game between the Afghans and the Bahrainis.

“We came for the volleyball tournament between the British, Danish, Americans and Bahrainis,” Ali said. “We were happy when we heard about the competition because playing volleyball is good for our health, and it is also entertaining to play with other nationalities.”
