NAPLES, Italy - African, European and U.S. military representatives gather together to train in preparation for the 2011 Africa Partnership Station mission on Naval Support Activity Capodichino, Nov. 30.

The APS international staff training will last for twelve days and will cover topics such as outreach programs, staff structure and the finalization of deployment details before the APS 2011 mission, scheduled to start in February

“It’s a great opportunity for me as someone who is originally from Africa; I was born and raised in Cameroon.” said Lt. Onege Bateagborsangaya, training organizer and planner.

“This training is particularly important because it is one of the last opportunities for us to get together with our international partners and finalize plans before the APS deployment. Aside from the familiarization with the APS mission, we want to improve our relationships with our international partners and establish lines of communication so we can update each other as we prepare for the APS [2011] mission.”

Thirty-two representatives from Cameroon, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Togo, United Kingdom and United States are participating in this training. These representatives will make up the core of the 2011 APS staff.

“I have enjoyed the training very much,” said Cameroon navy Cmdr. Jean Calvin Nlend, deputy APS West commander for 2011. “The training is very informative and enables us to build the team spirit that will be needed for the APS mission.”

APS is an international security cooperation initiative, facilitated by Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, aimed at strengthening global maritime partnerships through training and collaborative activities in order to improve maritime safety and security in Africa.

As part of the U.S. Navy’s goal to build global maritime partnerships, APS provides a platform to support sustained, focused training and multi-national/organizational collaboration on a regional scale.

“APS is the Naval Forces Africa banner international event for maritime security on the continent of Africa,” said Rear Adm. Gerard Heuber, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa director for policy, resources and strategy. “We are working along lines of effort in an international military partnering operation to develop African solutions to African problems.”
