PANJSHIR PROVINCE, Afghanistan - The first public library in Panjshir opened, Nov. 22, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Bazarak District.

The library includes more than 500 Afghanistan law reference books to assist anyone in need of judicial help or for public reading. This is one of many projects dedicated to developing the justice sector of Afghanistan.

“This is a great step for the Afghan people,” said Mahboobullah Nickzad, legal advisor for Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team. “We are trying to extend these kinds of libraries in the future to the rest of the country so that our justice professionals will be more educated when they represent Afghan people in court.”

The building was originally built by the northern alliance and reconstructed by the PRT. The reconstruction involved replacing windows, placing generators, and supplying a computer and carpeting.

This is one of nine planned law reference libraries in three provinces of Bamyan, Parwan and Panjshir, and the first of three law libraries to open in Panjshir Province.

The judge advocate office for Task Force Wolverine, 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, funded the rehabilitation and outfitting of one room with a work table, desks, a computer and bookcases in the Bazarak Ministry of Information and Culture building.

Panjshir Deputy Minister of Cultural Affairs, Omar Sultan, was one of several speakers at the opening ceremony in a nearby courthouse. The formal portion of the ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting at the entrance of the library.

Various local and national media were present to cover the opening, along with the judge advocate staff from Task Force Red Bulls of 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, and Panjshir PRT members.
