KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition security forces killed more than 15 armed insurgents during an operation in Sherzad District, Nangarhar province last night.

The security force was searching for a Taliban senior leader and foreign fighter facilitator who also raises funds for the Taliban and plans attacks against Afghan National Security Force and coalition forces.

The security force followed intelligence tips to a remote compound in Sherzad District to search for the senior leader. As they approached the targeted compound, the security force came under immediate machine gun and small arms fire by numerous insurgents as they fled the area.

The security force responded, killing numerous insurgents. Further inspection of the engagement area confirmed all of the insurgents were armed with multiple automatic weapons, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and rounds and hand grenades. The security force destroyed all of the weapons to eliminate future use.

Once they secured the area, the security force cleared the targeted compound, ensuring the safety of the women and children throughout the search. The security force found additional automatic weapons in the compound and after initial questioning, detained one suspected insurgent.

No civilians, Afghan or coalition forces were harmed during this operation. The security force is still gathering information to determine if the targeted individual was among the insurgents.
