FORWARD OPERATING BASE WRIGHT, Afghanistan -- The Kunar Provincial Reconstruction Team, alongside leadership from the tenant commands of Forward Operating Base Wright, hosted a joint Afghan and American Thanksgiving dinner at the FOB Wright dining facility, Nov. 25.

Afghan leaders at the provincial and district levels, as well as representatives from the various ministries and departments of the provincial government, totalling 29 in all, were also in attendance.

“We are very grateful to have our friends from the Afghan government here today,” said U.S. Navy Cmdr. Brian Goss of Edgewater, Md., commander of the Kunar PRT. “Thanksgiving is a day to celebrate what we are thankful for, and today, more than ever, we are grateful to have our partners in the Afghan leadership here to celebrate this holiday with us.”

For a holiday which began as a coming together of two different cultures, today was a fitting occasion.

“It’s important for us to share our culture with the leadership of the Afghan people just as it is equally important for us to be as sensitive as we can to their culture ... this Thanksgiving celebration helps accomplish both,” said U.S. Army Col. Craig A. Bargfrede, Iowa Agribusiness Development Team commander and native of Ankeny, Iowa.

For their part, the Afghan guests gained a deeper understanding of an American tradition, which they found similar to their Eid celebration that concluded the week prior.

“Today I understand better the history of America, and I am grateful,” said Rahmatullah Himat, district sub-governor for the Nurgol District. Also, understanding the hardship of U.S. service members who were unable to be with their families on this holiday, he added, “(To the families of the American Soldiers) we are extremely thankful for your sacrifice in sending your sons and daughters to protect the people of Afghanistan and bring prosperity and a brighter future. The Soldiers here are selfless, and they are very much appreciated.”
