MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Boots, cowboy hats and worn-out jeans could have been the uniform of the day at a free country music concert at the air station’s theater, Nov. 17.

“It was fun,” said Cpl. Josh R. Tate, an administration clerk with the air station’s adjutant. “I think that it’s great that we were able to see a country concert on the air station.”

Hosted by Marine Corps Community Services in partnership with a local radio station, 95.1 WRNS the concert featured artists Randy Houser, Craig Campbell, Rodney Atkins, Luke Bryan and Justin Moore.

“I think when artists take time out of their busy schedule to spend time with Marines it’s great,” said Col. Philip J. Zimmerman, the air station’s commanding officer. “The artists shared some culture with deserving Marines and families.”

Craig Campbell opened the show for a full house of more than 1,600 fans with “The Star spangled Banner.”

“It is my pleasure to be a part of this,” said Campbell. “There are certain people who were born to sing and some born to be in the military, and I am grateful for those service members allowing me to do what I do.”

With first-come, first-served seating, attendees began showing up at the theater more than three hours before the doors opened to try to grab the best seats.

“I have never felt more appreciated by an audience then when I perform for the military,” said Houser, known for his song, “Boots On.” “The fact that service members give up years of their lives to defend this country and pave the way for someone like me, who is getting to do exactly what I want to do with my life is amazing. That’s what we call freedom. You would have to fight me to keep me from playing for service members.”

Even in a packed house, the artists’ acoustic guitars and personal stories about songs help to create a cozy atmosphere with the audience.

“It was a great concert,” said Kaylee C. Oubre, a military spouse. “I think it’s amazing that they came here to perform for the Marines.”

The concert ended with a final thank-you from the country music artists to the audience for defending America’s freedoms.

“Coming out here and performing is the least we can do for the armed forces,” said Bryan.
