CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan -- Afghan Border Police and coalition forces leadership met to discuss the development of the new 6th Zone at the ABP conference at Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, Nov. 21.

Maj. Gen. Richard P. Mills, Regional Command Southwest commander, hosted the meeting in order to discuss recent accomplishments, training, recruiting and other issues concerning the ABP 6th Zone. Also in attendance were Col. Sultan Mahmood, 6th Zone commander and the provincial governors from Nimroz and Helmand provinces.

The new 6th Afghan Border Police Zone now works exclusively with RC(SW) on issues concerning border security. Each regional command works with a partnered ABP zone on issues including trafficking, immigration and security.

“One of the major points was the fact that the 6th Zone, which recently stood up in early November, is now able to address the needs of the four Afghan Border Police battalions in our [area of operations],” said Col. Robert G. Golden, development director of RC(SW) Afghan National Security Forces. “Prior to that, RC South and the 3rd Zone were responsible for that. One of the big points today was the fact that we have our own zone commander and our own zone headquarters that can address our needs here in RC Southwest.”

The conference also highlighted some of the recent accomplishments of the 6th Zone policemen, including the seizure of 11 weapons and more than 90 kilograms of narcotics. The border policemen also made more than 1,600 arrests in their area of operations.

“Afghan Border Policemen constantly deal with drug dealers and traffickers who try to destabilize the security and peace of our people,” Mahmood said. “We make sure to arrest them and hold them accountable. The policemen are definitely proud of their accomplishments.”

Golden spoke about the future possibilities for training during the meeting, mentioning that the border policemen will be utilizing everything from advanced driving schools to counter-improvised explosive device training.

“They’re capitalizing on all these things and they’re sending their border policemen to these courses, and it’s giving them that added capability to make them even better,” Golden said. “The sky’s the limit. They’re very determined and committed individuals.”
