KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition security forces captured a Taliban leader, who is possibly associated with a failed suicide attack on Forward Operating Base Gardez, during an operation in Paktiya province yesterday.

The Taliban leader commanded a cell of fighters involved in the facilitation and emplacement of improvised explosive devices on public roads. He also coordinated and conducted IED ambushes on coalition force convoys and aircraft.

Based on intelligence reports, the security force targeted a compound in Ebrahim Khel in Zurmat District to search for the individual.

Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compounds peacefully before the joint security force cleared and secured the area. Initial questioning at the scene helped identify the targeted individual, who was detained along with one of his associates.

The assault force conducted the operation with no shots fired and they ensured the safety of the women and children throughout the search.
