    II Marine Expeditionary Force

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. – Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 Marines trained with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 467 in a rapid ground refueling and combat offload exercise on the Cherry Point flight line Nov. 4.

“We use this training to better prepare our Marines who are fresh out of their military occupational specialty school,” said Sgt. Jon R. Lofthouse, a KC-130J load master with VMGR-252. “The Marines will be setting up a makeshift gas station coming off of the C-130, so that the aircraft that we are training with can come in, land, refuel and go.”

The offloading consisted of dropping supplies quickly out the back of the KC-130J to simulate when troops need to offload in unsafe areas.

The KC-130J Hercules refueled an AH-1W Super Cobra and a UH-1N Huey during the exercise.

“I think it went extremely well for my first time conducting this training,” said Lance Cpl. Richard T. Magee, a load master student with VMGR-252. “I believe this training takes a Marine’s full concentration both physically and mentally. This is very dangerous if you do not pay attention. You could be dropped with a load or hit by a helicopter blade.”

Magee said the Marines set up and tore down the mobile gas station in less than 30 minutes.

The setup consisted of hooking up several hoses that would run in two directions to account for the multiple aircraft that might come through.

Lofthouse said the VMGR-252 Marines also worked on combat offload training.

“The training was fast and effective,” said Lofthouse. “The Marines conducted themselves the way they needed to make sure the job got done quickly and efficiently but most important safely.”
