SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Third Army commemorated Veterans Day with its new neighbors by participating in two local events in the Shaw Air Force Base, S.C. community.

Col. Robert Young, Third Army Chief of Staff of Strategic Relocation spoke at a Veterans Day ceremony, Nov. 11, at the American Legion Post 17 in Camden, S.C.

Young highlighted Third Army’s history in past wars while emphasizing the importance of Veterans Day.

“Today is a time to honor our Veterans and service members who have served in the past, the present and who will serve in the future,” Young told the audience. “We are thankful for those who have served but also to those who will stand up to serve tomorrow.”

He also took a moment to thank the local community for their support as Third Army moves to Shaw Air Force Base over the next year as part of the Base Realignment and Closure of Ft. McPherson, Ga.

Col. David Bishop, Third Army Chief of Staff, spoke about the higher calling members of the military have at the Sumter Veterans Day Ceremony, Nov. 11, sponsored by the Sumter County Veterans Association and the citizens of Sumter.

Before introducing Bishop, Sumter, S.C. mayor the Hon. Joseph T. McElveen, Jr spoke about the love of the military the Sumter community has, explaining their uncommon patriotism.

“That is really what Veterans Day is about, uncommon patriotism, because any man or woman who wears the uniform makes a sacrifice,” McElveen said. “Any man or woman who wears the uniform has said, I love my country, I’m willing to do whatever it takes for my country.”

Bishop emphasized that this sense of duty continues today, stressing the importance of honoring not just the greatest generation but the latest generation.

“They [service members] are stationed around the world, standing in harm’s way to protect us at this very moment,” Bishop said. “Just as their forbearers, they have placed their nation above themselves. Their collective experience from the gas-filled trenches of World War I where our grandfathers served, to the deserts and mountains of Southwest Asia where many of our children are currently serving, covers much of the change and turmoil of the 20th century. Their stories are our history. And that history continues to be written. “

Bishop also left the community with a message of thanks for their support of the Third Army Family as the command moves to the Sumter community over the next year.

“On behalf of the 103 Army families who have already moved to the Sumter area and the more than 1200 who will move here next year, thank you very much for taking us in to this wonderful community,” Bishop said. “We are excited about our relocation to South Carolina, thanks in no small part to you people here, your community spirit and your support to our nation’s military.”
