FORT BLISS, Texas -- More than 500 people celebrated heroes and history at the annual Historical Association Veteran's Gala held at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center at East Fort Bliss, Nov. 5.

Eleven El Paso veterans of war were honored at the event. Attendees had the opportunity to meet veterans, young and old, who made contributions toward the freedoms Americans benefit from today.

"It was great talking to some of the heroes here today, but as we honor them, we must not forget our fallen comrades around the world who paid the ultimate price," said Maj. Steven Meadows, commander of A Company, Wounded Warrior Battalion. "It is critical we don't forget, because all wars are part of our history that helped make America what it is today."

Guest speaker for the evening was former Fort Bliss Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Robert P. Lennox, who currently serves as U.S. Army's fourth Deputy Chief of Staff, G8. He is responsible for integration and programming across the Army to meet current and future force requirements.

"Over the last couple of decades you've trained generations of soldiers, deployed them to war, welcomed them home, dressed their wounds and ready them to their next mission," said Lennox. "You comforted the children and the spouses of the wounded and the fallen. You have shown patriotism and love to the young men and women who proudly wear the uniform of our country. No community or installation in the Army has done more for the American soldier. Fort Bliss and El Paso will always occupy a special place in our heart."

The event served as a fundraiser to support renovations and exhibit enhancements needed for the Fort Bliss Museums, but, most importantly, to honor veterans. The Historical Association raised more than $1 million in the past years, of which numerous amounts were used to purchase and display countless historical military artifacts making the 1st Armored Division museum one of the most sought-out museums to visit in the Army, said Peter Poessiger, museum director.
