KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force patrol arrested a wanted senior-Taliban leader in Musa Qal’ah, Helmand province, Monday.

Multiple intelligence sources and tips from local citizens led ANSF and ISAF to the suspected location of a senior Taliban leader who led approximately 300 fighters in the Musa Qal’ah area. He reportedly was appointed the leader of all Taliban forces in and around Marjeh and was responsible for the defense of the area prior to the coalition offensive there. He has also planned, coordinated and executed numerous small-arms and improvised attacks against ANSF and ISAF.

Upon arrival at the suspected Taliban leader’s location, ANSF and ISAF surrounded the compound and used loudspeakers to call-out all occupants to allow them to exit peacefully. There was no response.

The joint security force then entered the compound and searched it. More than 10 suspected insurgents were detained during the operation without incident.

Prior to their departure the joint security force became aware of four armed insurgents setting up an ambush in order to attack the fore as they departed. The joint security force used supporting air assets to attack the insurgents, killing all four.

The detainees were taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.
