KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghanistan National Security and International Security Assistance Force patrol killed numerous insurgents during an operation in Nahr-e Saraj District, Helmand province, Saturday.

Multiple intelligence sources and tips from local citizens led the joint security force to a suspected compound where a Taliban leader was thought to be located. The Taliban leader is known to plan and participate in the emplacement of improvised explosive devices and attacks against coalition forces. He also facilitates the distribution of weapons, ammunition and IED’s to Taliban fighters.

Upon arrival and securing of the suspected insurgent compound, the joint security force used loudspeakers to call-out the occupants. Two men, 10 women, and 24 children were protected when they exited peacefully.

Four armed insurgents were killed as they attempted to engage the joint security force.

Numerous automatic weapons, grenades and a suicide vest were found and destroyed safely onsite.

After initial questioning by ANSF, two insurgents were detained and were taken by Afghan authorities for further questioning.
