KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces detained more than 10 suspected insurgents during four operations aimed at capturing Taliban and Haqqani leadership in southern and eastern Afghanistan Nov. 5.

An Afghan and coalition security force targeting a Taliban senior leader who plans, coordinates and conducts attacks in Musa Qal’ah District, detained several suspected insurgents during an overnight operation in Helmand province.

Intelligence tips led the security force to a remote compound in Musa Qal’ah District to search for the targeted individual. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compounds peacefully and then the joint security force cleared and secured the area.

After initial questioning at the scene, the security force detained the suspected insurgents. The security force also found multiple pounds of morphine base.

A separate security force in Zabul targeted a Taliban senior leader operating in the improvised explosive device network in Shah Joy, detaining two suspected insurgents overnight. Acting on intelligence reports, the security force went to a compound in Ludin-e Sharqi in Shah Joy District to search for the targeted individual.

After an Afghan-led call out and questioning at the scene, the security force detained the insurgents. The security force also found machine gun ammunition and military uniforms at the scene.

In eastern Afghanistan, a joint security force targeting a Haqqani Network facilitator for the movement of vehicles and narcotics in support of the network, detained several suspected insurgents in Paktika province. The security force targeted a compound in Orgun city to search for the facilitator.

Additional suspected insurgents were detained in Paktiya province while another security force searched for a Haqqani-affiliated Taliban senior leader who coordinates suicide bombings throughout Paktiya. The operation was conducted at a compound east of Panjpay in Zormat District.

The assault force did not fire their weapons during any of these operations and they protected the women and children for the duration of the searches.
