CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune will once again host the annual Polar Plunge at Onslow Beach, January 2011.

The Polar Plunge will serve as a fundraising event to support the Special Olympics Onslow County athletes for the coming year.

The Polar Plunge is an annual event in which service members and civilians get together for a good cause. The motto for the Polar Plunge is ‘Freezin’ for a Reason’ and people will do just that, by jumping into cold waters.

The event is scheduled to take place at Onslow Beach and at a pre-designated time, the entire crowd of participants will run into the cold Atlantic Ocean for a good cause.

“We’re not just going to jump into the ocean and be done,” said Dawn McCullen, the local coordinator for the Onslow County Special Olympics. “There’s going to be a sand castle building contest for the children, costume contest and raffles for people who raised more than 100 dollars individually.”

For the plungers, there is slated to be a disc jockey to keep their motivation high before they plunge into the freezing water.

“We’re also going to have donuts and coffee out there for the plungers,” said McCullen. “We’re also hoping to have a heating tent for this year’s event.”

McCullen said she’s hoping for 300 or more participants.

“All of the pledges and donations we receive will go toward the children participating in the Special Olympics,” said McCullen. “The money will be used to help with housing, transportation, uniforms and training.”

The housing is for when students travel throughout North Carolina to Special Olympics events and need a place to stay.

“The uniforms we have are all different colors,” said McCullen. “This year we want all of our athletes to wear the city colors: blue and white.”

All of the money that is donated during the Polar Plunge will be going back into the community. With this, McCullen hopes more people come out and participate in an effort to help their local sports athletes.

If people want to participate in the Onslow County Polar Plunge, it will cost 25 dollars, or they can have friends and family sponsor them. McCullen also stated that people can come in teams of eight to 20 for 200 dollars, 21 to 30 plungers for 300 dollars, and 31 or more plungers for 400 dollars in pledges.

“Plungers can raise money online by going to www.firstgiving.com/sonc,” said McCullen.
