Single Marines and sailors celebrated Thanksgiving this year with their military family at Afterburners, Nov. 3.

Marine Corps Community Services Single Marine Program hosted the Thanksgiving dinner this year for the fifth time. The SMP had a turnout of near 50 single Marines and sailors.

“The Thanksgiving dinner was our opportunity to acknowledge the single Marines and sailors aboard the Air Station,” said Benjie Pangelinan, the SMP assistant coordinator for the Air Station and Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. “Some service members are not able to go home for Thanksgiving, so our goal was to make them feel like they were at home this year during our Afterburners Thanksgiving event.”

The buffet included turkey, stuffing, cranberries and several other food items regularly found at a
    Thanksgiving meal.

“It is hard for us single Marines and sailors to go home during the holidays,” said Cpl. Justin Hughley, a Marine Wing Support Squadron 273 basic water technician. “We appreciate events like this because it makes us feel more at home, forget about the distance from our family and gives a reason to leave the barracks. Also, since were not allowed to cook in the barracks it is nice to get a free home-cooked meal.”

The event included beer samples from a micro brewery and musical entertainment throughout the night.

“I just hope everyone had a great time, built camaraderie and had a chance to meet with other single Marines and sailors,” said Brett Westerfield, the SMP coordinator for the Air Station and Parris Island. “I really enjoy being able to bond with the Marines and sailors. We continue to have this Thanksgiving event each year because the service members really seem to enjoy it.”
