KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army commandos from the Advanced Skills Training pilot course graduated at Camp Morehead, Saturday.

This four-week course is designed to enhance each commando’s non-commissioned officer abilities in their specific occupation so they can emerge as better leaders.

Each student in the 33-person class is assigned to a group of students in the same military occupational specialty. The specialties chosen for this initial course were reconnaissance, engineering, medical and mortar team.

This is the first time the “Level 2 Training” has been conducted for ANA commandos. The training is similar to the U.S. Army Level 2 Training, where students move from basic understanding of their MOS to being able to lead soldiers within various skill sets.

Since the last commando kandak graduated, the 9th Kandak, Aug. 18, Military Professional Resources Inc., has been creating this course to help expand these elite warriors’ knowledge in their specialties. MPRI is a company hired by the U.S. government to advise the Afghan National Army on training, infrastructure construction, and strategic defense to aid the ANA’s progress.

Gen. Bismillah Khan Mohammadi, ANA chief of staff, said he feels this is another step in the right direction and passed words of support to the graduates.

“Now that you are going back to your units with your hands full [of knowledge] you can take what you have learned here back to your teams and your kandaks,” Mohammadi said. “Pass this knowledge on to your brothers. I know you will make a big difference in your Kandaks and Afghanistan. Congratulations!”

More classes are planned for the future.
