CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Service members, families and friends enjoyed a day of fishing and bonding during the first Fun Family Fishing Day at Orde Pond aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Sept. 18. Throughout the duration of the event, free food and beverages were served for the fishers in attendance.

Some came for the sheer enjoyment of the sport, others to break the normal weekend routine of sitting around the home watching television.

At the end of the event, the participants’ names were drawn from a hat. When their name was called, they were allowed to choose from several gifts, which included new hats, T-shirts, water guns and fishing gear.

Victor Salazar, a young military dependent and fishing enthusiast, participated in the fishing day with hopes of catching the biggest fish possible.

“I keep getting really good chances to catch a big fish,” said Salazar. “They’re really strong and hard to catch and the big ones usually take the worm in one bite, but fishing is just fun.”

Salazar added that his favorite part about fishing is when the fish he has been trying to catch actually bites his line.

Another participant in the event, a military spouse, said she enjoyed the tranquil scenery at the pond.

“It’s just nice to sit out here in the quiet,” she said. “I heard about it on the (Marine Corps Community Services) website. My children have been into fishing for a while; I was always intimidated by it. Now, I may be brave enough to participate in one of the (fishing) competitions.”

Marybeth LeMaire, outdoor recreation specialist with MCCS, said fishing can be done at any age, with any group of people, at any skill level.

“Fishing can be a family event or done by a single person,” said LeMaire. “It’s a nice, relaxing thing to do and since this is our first Family Fun Fishing Day, we decided to do something different than a tournament. (The goal is to) bring people out and make them aware of what’s available in the area and on Camp Lejeune.”
