    KHOST PROVINCE, AFGHANISTAN

KHOST PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The 2-19th Indiana Agribusiness Development Team transferred operational authority to the 3-19th Indiana ADT in a ceremony held at Forward Operating Base Salerno Oct. 14.

The 2-19th acted as the agricultural advisors for Khost and Paktika Provinces since assuming authority Dec. 24, 2009, from the 1-19th Indiana ADT.

“We have shared common goals and developed the Afghans as a nation. Over the last year we’ve worked hand in hand toward this goal,” said U.S. Army Col. Michael Osburn of Martinsville, Ind., 2-19th Ind. ADT commander. “I have seen the progress we have made in Khost Province. This progress is a direct reflection of shared commitment for Afghanistan.”

The 2-19th conducted 179 mounted combat patrols in order to train and mentor the local extension agents.

“Today is a memorable day for many reasons. First, it’s our last day of operations here in Afghanistan for the 2-19th but, more importantly, it’s the first day of operations for the 3-19th to continue to show support with the ADT program from the state of Indiana,” Osburn said. “The times that we’ve spent in Afghanistan have been very memorable to each of us.”

Throughout the 2-19th’s tenure they were able help more than 4,000 farmers throughout the provinces through their agriculture advisement.

“I am proud of the efforts that we have done and I will look fondly back on the days spent in Afghanistan at FOB Salerno,” Osburn said.

According to 3-19th leadership, the unit stands ready to build upon the success of its predecessors.

“We stand ready to work along side you to continue the mission,” said U.S. Army Col. Walter Colbert, from Indianapolis, Ind., 3-19th Ind. ADT commander. “As fellow Hoosiers we understand the importance of continuing on the mission … to continue to develop this area in partnership with our civilian partners and our military brethren.”

Note about unit designations for ADTs: While the number 2-19 would typically indicate 2nd Battalion, 19th Regiment for most Army units, the number 2 in 2-19th indicates the second year of the 19th ADT's five-year commitment to agribusiness development in Afghanistan. A similar designation applies to the 3-19th.
