FORT EUSTIS, Va. - Waterborne soldiers assigned to the 10th Transportation Battalion spent the afternoon of Aug. 4 with approximately 65 children providing hands-on experience with Army equipment and weapons as part of Operation Purple Camp, a Department Of Defense sponsored summer camp geared toward pre-teens and junior high school-aged military family members.
Operation Purple Camp is a non-profit camp for children of military members who have recently deployed or are pending deployment. The week-long camp is geared toward teaching military children what life is like for their military parents. There is also a focus on communication skills that are needed to deal with the stress of being a child of a military service member.
"These are the children of our fellow brothers and sisters in arms," said Lt. Col. Terry Draper, commander, 10th Transportation Battalion and event organizer. It feels good when you see the children enjoying themselves, they are excited, happy. The camp also helps take their mind off upcoming deployments which are just as hard on the children as it is for the service member who is about to deploy."
Joe Long, 4-H Rural Life Center director said the theme for this year's camp is 'Kids Serve Too'. A theme that expounds upon the selfless service and dedication given by the children of our nations service members.
Operation Purple Camp gets its name as a result of mixing together each branch of service unique color, the color purple. It is a symbol showcasing the coming together of all the military services for the sake of their children.
