KAPISA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan contractor, Amin Kapisa Construction and Road Building Company, and Kapisa Provincial Reconstruction Team hosted the Malikar High School ribbon cutting ceremony Sept. 20 to celebrate the completion of Malikar High School.

“We are very thankful that Kapisa PRT built this school for us. It is not just for this generation, it will be following generations and … the people will never forget,” said Asif Nang, spokesperson for Afghanistan’s Ministry of Education. “We appreciate the PRTs, especially Kapisa PRT.”

"Overall, we are very happy, the people are very happy that the PRT built the school," said Noor Agha Hoshmand, Koh Band District’s sub-governor. This school was built to accommodate 700 boys from the area, and as a result, the village’s current coed school will be used to provide more girls with an education.

Malikar High School construction began in April 2009. The facility has eight classrooms, cost roughly $138,595 to build, and includes a traditional Afghan latrine, guard room, water reservoir and boundary wall. The Ministry of Education is eager to begin holding classes as soon as possible.

"This school will bring opportunity for future Afghan leaders, and the PRT is happy they were able to work with Amin Kapisa Construction Company to build this project for the people of Koh Band," said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Amanda Huffman, civil engineer.

Koh Band District’s deputy governor, Hashem Hemat, joined Amin Agha, deputy director of Amin Kapisa Construction Company, the school’s principal and teachers, and local villagers to witness the ribbon cutting ceremony at Malikar.

The PRT’s civil engineers have completed more than $11 million in projects, including a $6.5 million, 28 kilometer road, four schools valued at $1.2 million, a $20,000 recreation field, a $185,000 mosque, two health projects valued at $225,000, and a $45,000 flood protection project.

Kapisa PRT assists the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in providing a secure, stable environment for reconstruction efforts by increasing government officials’ capabilities and capacities. The Malikar High School project is an example of the development projects the PRT is using to connect the government to the people and to improve quality of life in the province.
