AFGHANISTAN - Fifteen non-commissioned officers from the Afghan Uniformed Police force arrived at the Joint Security Academy Southwest, Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, for a new joint NCO course, Sept 23.

The first Afghan National Army NCO course graduated last month from JSAS. This new course combines members of the ANA and AUP to help form a unified force to provide security in Afghanistan.

“Today we received 15 non-commissioned officers from Nimruz, they will be integrated with the Afghan National Army NCOs from the 215th Corps,” said Staff Sgt. Patrick Sansevere, the operations training chief at JSAS and staff non-commissioned officer in charge of the joint NCO course. “What we are doing here at JSAS is breaking them down and letting them know that they are one team for one fight.”

After arriving at JSAS, the recruits are given a brief on the rules and regulations they will be required to follow while at the academy.

Following this brief every recruit is shaved. This is done to cut down on hygiene issues during training. This is also done in conjuction with both groups dawning coveralls to promote the idea of unity during the course.

“It’s all done for discipline and for better training,” said Ali Ahmad, an Afghan Uniformed Police officer from Nimruz province. “Because we are police officers, we should have better discipline than others.”

After going through this process, the recruits’ names are placed in a roster and entered into a system using retinal identification and fingerprint software employed by coalition forces throughout Afghanistan. Obtaining this information allows the identity of each officer or soldier to be confirmed during and after the course.

Full physical and mental examinations are also part of the process. The recruits are checked to make sure that they are capable of performing all actions necessary to complete the course.

Once all the physical and mental standards are met, the recruits have completed a transformation preparing them to begin their training.
