KABUL, Afghanistan - Work is nearly complete on a new 100-bed hospital in Khost City that will not only double patient capacity over the existing facility, but improve the quality of and access to healthcare for the province's residents.
Officials plan to open the facility later this fall. The hospital will include an emergency room, male, female and children's wards, mid-wife and maternity wards, x-ray and oncology departments.
Laboratories, inpatient and outpatient care facilities and office space for medical personnel will be included.
The Afghan Ministry of Health will provide the staff for the hospital and the International Medical Corps has agreed to supply the hospital's equipment.
The existing Khost hospital has 50 beds for a population of nearly 1 million people. Many residents are forced to take sick and injured people across the border to Pakistan for treatment. Officials say the new hospital will provide access to better quality healthcare and create jobs in the province.
