KABUL, Afghanistan - Acting on intelligence reports, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted a combined operation and detained two insurgents in Helmand province Sept. 8.

The targeted compound is linked to two key Taliban commanders prominent in the improvised explosive device facilitation network supplying Sangin-based insurgent networks. One of the commanders controls a central clearing-house for incoming IED components. He distributes the components throughout the Sangin area.

Upon entering the targeted compound, an armed individual challenged the combined force. The force told him - in both Pashtun and Dari - to drop his weapon. When he ignored the orders and advanced toward the combined force he was fatally shot.

Two individuals were detained for possession of weapons and 10 kilograms of wet opium. The individuals were turned over to the Afghan police to face weapons and narcotics charges.
