MANAMA, Bahrain - Master-At-Arms 2nd Class Mark Ryan Greer was selected as the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command's (NAVCENT)/5th Fleet (C5F) Junior Sailor of the Quarter, for the 2nd quarter of 2010.

As a shift leader for NAVCENT's Executive Protection detail, Greer is in charge of a four-man team that conducts protective services for personnel in high-risk positions who could be potential targets.

While Jones says he is surprised to have been selected as the NAVCENT JSOQ, he is proud of the work he does every day.

"It's a privilege to represent this command. It has to be one of the best commands I've been at thus far in my Navy career," said Greer, who has served in the Navy since July 2003.

Greer recently began pursuing an associate degree in general studies. He hopes that furthering his education will help him promote to first class petty officer and then possibly chief petty officer.

"I'm taking my first college class, so I am trying to focus on that right now," said Greer.

Greer's father, a retired Army 1st Sgt., motivated Greer to further his education.

"My father has always been my inspiration," said Greer, "He was working a full-time job, going to school and had a family. I still don't know how he did it."

In following his father's example, he continuously strives to better himself and has a strong philosophy that drives his ambitions.

"Don't be satisfied with yourself. When that happens, you become complacent, and in complacency there is no improvement," said Greer.

The NAVCENT and C5F AOR, encompass approximately 2.5 million square miles of area including the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman, parts of the Indian Ocean and 27 countries. Fifth Fleet's priority mission is to conduct persistent maritime operations to deter and counter disruptive countries, defeat violent extremism and strengthen partner nations' maritime capabilities in order to promote a secure maritime environment in the U.S. Central Command AOR.
