MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - West Carteret High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps visited Cherry Point to conduct training and learn about the Navy boat docks Aug. 4.

The NJROTC students visited the Air Station over a three-day period, and during that time they had hands-on training with the obstacle course, weapon simulations, combat water survival, land navigation and visited the gas chamber and the Navy boat docks.

“Our primary mission at the boat docks is to logistically support Cherry Point’s bombing target 11 range,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Daniel England, Navy boat docks’ staff noncommissioned officer in charge.

While the NJROTC visited the docks, they learned about the individual jobs of the Navy men and women of the boat docks.

“We have done a lot of training with the different bases around the area,” said retired Coast Guard Capt. Dave Arnold, the senior Naval science instructor at West Carteret. “We have flown in Coast Guard C-130s and Army 860s. We also had the pleasure of sailing in an overnight sea cruise.”

Arnold explained his cadets meet twice a week, one day providing community service while using the other for training.

“The training that we get to do really gives us a view of what we can expect if we do enlist after high school,” said NJROTC cadet Elizabeth Penley, the West Carteret NJROTC executive officer and a third- year participant. “This is my second time coming to Cherry Point for NJROTC training. I have a lot of fun in the program.”

Penley said she is looking into the possibilities of joining the Navy after high school.

“Today was awesome and gave me great experience for the future,” said NJROTC cadet Haleigh Gauthreaux, a first-year member of the program. “After high school, I’m going to go to the Coast Guard Academy to become an engineer or operations manager.”

Arnold said the student’s favorite part of the whole trip was the gas chamber and weapons simulator.

“The kids do not get gassed or anything in the chamber,” said Nancy Corbin, community relations chief for Cherry Point. “They just get to go inside and try on all the different gear.”

According to Gauthreaux, the training she received while visiting Cherry Point increases her appreciation for the air station.

“Cherry Point is a second home to me,” said Gauthreaux. “Besides getting to drive the Navy boat, just being here is great. The people are extremely nice, and they always show us a good time when we are here.”
