FORT A.P. HILL, Va. – As Boy Scouts from the Brownsea Island Scout Camp stood in formation before the stage, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Karl Horst, Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region and U.S. Army Military District of Washington commander, commended the Boy Scouts of America during the daily opening ceremony at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree July 30.
Horst, 27-year Army veteran, visited the Jamboree to observe the hard work of the Joint Task Force-National Scout Jamboree that is supporting the event. Senior Scout leaders presented the general with the military photo of the day, an image selected by Jamboree leadership depicting service members interacting with and supporting Boy Scouts.
“On behalf of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen of the Joint Force Headquarters, it is a distinct privilege to accept this photo,” Horst said.”It is truly a privilege for us to be able to support and sustain you and be your partners for this 100th anniversary of scouting.”
Horst called the convergence and camaraderie of the Scouts “a tremendous thing,” asking Scouts to reach out to service members working at the Jamboree. The general also drew parallels between the service that both Boy Scouts and service members provide.
“I would offer to you that scouting, like being a member of the armed services, is about being part of something larger than yourself,” he said.”We are all called to serve. Scouts serve all around the nation in their communities. Service members are also called to serve.”
“We are kindred spirits,” he added.
Following the presentation, the general greeted Boy Scouts and leaders, posing for photographs and speaking to service members in attendance.
The NSJ is a joint effort, bringing together nearly 2,000 active duty, reserve and National Guard service members from all five branches of the armed forces working with the Boy Scouts of America to ensure a safe and secure event. The joint task force plans, coordinates and executes all Department of Defense operations, activities and actions while coordinating interagency operations for the 2010 NSJ. The event runs through Aug. 4.
