BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - A Dining Facility on Bagram Airfield now resembles an art gallery thanks to two contractors working for Fluor.

Jeff Cannon from League City, Texas, and Shane Brown from Houston, Texas, have worked many different jobs with Fluor, though none of those made use of their rare talents.

The two help raise unit morale across Bagram Airfield by creating large wall hangings of patches worn by units supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

They create the artwork using styrofoam and color them using latex paint and food coloring, creating art which decorates as well as inspires Service members away from their families.

Each patch is made out of numerous pieces of styrofoam using a color proof of the intended design. To give the finished product depth, features of a unit’s patch are created from separate pieces of foam.

Cutting with jigsaws to form a rough outline, Cannon and Brown then smooth the foam over using sandpaper and round off edges to enhance precision details. Crevices are filled using a compound of paint, egg whites and flour. White latex paint is then mixed with food coloring to color the foam and finish the design.

Brown and Cannon’s talents are not limited to copying unit insignias from paper. The Statue of Liberty against a cloudy backdrop, a landscape of Parwan province and the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Logo are hanging on the walls of the Drop Zone Café thanks to their talents.

“I’ve been into art all my life,” says Brown about his passion. He assisted Cannon until administrators at the contracting agency he works for discovered his talents. “We want to put the effort into them,” said Brown regarding the quality of work he and his partner produce.

“It’s rewarding because the people coming by to shake hands, the colonel coming by, admirals coming by and appreciating us and the Soldiers coming by shaking our hands,” says Brown about the thanks he receives from visitors and the Service members of Task Force Protector.
