FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. - A strong, cool breeze blew in across the lake carrying the smell of grilling chicken to friends and family of wounded veterans who gathered to thank them and celebrate their accomplishments.

Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors sponsored a turkey hunt followed by a community cookout Saturday, May 8, at Marquette Lake here.

Three soldiers from post and five soldiers from Letterkenny Army Depot took part in the hunt.

"I got a nice-sized Tom," said Sgt. Charles Tallent, 28th Infantry Division. Tallent was the only soldier from FTIG to bag a bird. Three soldiers from Letterkenny made a kill. One of these won the prize for the overall largest turkey.

"Even though they're wounded, we're there for them to assist in recovery," said Lt. Col. Bill Yearwood, post deputy commander. The day was a success, he added, and hopes to see more events like this in the future here.

The soldiers who participated in the event are current patients at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Tallent said that programs like this are good because soldiers at Walter Reed can
feel isolated from their unit and from the outside world.

"People often want to help but don't know what to do," said Helen Sajer, president of Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors, Inc.

Sajer founded Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors in 2007 as a way for people to get involved after the return of her son from Iraq, who was not injured.

Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors is a non-profit organization that receives no government funding. It provides activities such as hunting, fishing and sporting events to wounded Pa. National Guardsmen.

"I've never seen planning like this," said Matt Morrett of the Outdoor Channel. Morrett said the Outdoor Channel tries to do events to help wounded soldiers whenever possible. "We like to thank our men and women in uniform," he said. He also said that people sometimes take our rights, such as hunting, for granted.

Events such as the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors turkey hunt demonstrate the commitment of Pennsylvanians to show our gratitude to wounded state veterans by facilitating their participation in activities they enjoy during their recovery.
