    Story by Sgt. Ezekieljay Correa

    1st Marine Division

When faced with adversity, Marines find resilience among one another. Through shared experiences of embracing hardships and overcoming challenges, Marines form a close-knit bond.

For Cpl. Rohit Makam, a network administrator with Communications Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, the bond he shares with fellow Marines fosters aspirations of serving a higher purpose and finding pride in a sense of belonging.

Makam, a native of California, defines his view on the sense of belonging as, “The idea of being around those that are able to share the same experiences, while working alongside you, and are able to see the world the same as you do – and that’s all Marines.”

Characterizing himself as one who has a passion for learning, Makam is devoted to mastering the skills necessary for his occupation, as well as learning the concepts on a higher scale.

Makam used his progress as a means of contributing to his unit, a commodity that was noticed by the eyes of his unit leadership. “The level that he performs at exceeds his rank tremendously,” claims Chief Warrant Officer 2 Devon A. Luevano, a network engineer officer with Communications Company.

As a leader, Makam extends his purpose to mentoring his subordinates toward obtaining the same levels of proficiency. Training his subordinates to take independent action to find solutions, Makam’s mentorship promotes a method of contributing through one’s own initiative.

“When they figure out new things, it keeps them motivated,” explained Makam. “It makes them feel like they’re the ones making the decisions.”

Elaborating on the impact he wishes to leave, Makam states, “I want Communications Company and the Marines I have interacted with to be better, because I did what I could do to help. I want to be remembered as someone who really cares, did his very best, and never put anyone down.”

On April 18, Makam and his team of communications Marines took first place in the annual 1st MARDIV communications competition, which evaluated each team’s ability to effectively work together to provide and maintain the best communication, channeled through various communication systems.

Their win embodies the significance of unit cohesion. Taking a part in a shared effort of accomplishments, Marines find a purpose that contributes to the success and welfare of their comrades.
