SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mich. — In an effort to broaden its community engagement and support system, the 127th Wing has revitalized its Key Spouse and Volunteer Program, formerly known as the Air Force Key Spouse Program. The updated initiative, open to a broader spectrum of participants, now extends its reach to volunteer retirees, parents, and students.

The program, designed to enhance the well-being of military families and strengthen the bond between the Michigan Air National Guard and its community, has gained momentum under its new moniker at Selfridge. The change reflects a commitment to inclusivity and a recognition that the support network for service members extends beyond the traditional volunteer roles of spouses.

"This rebranding and expansion reflect our commitment to creating a robust and diverse support network within our community," said Jean Wixson, manager for the Military and Family Readiness Program, who has been an integral part of the transformation. "By broadening the program's eligibility, we hope to tap into a wealth of talent and resources that can contribute to the overall welfare of our military families."

Col. Micaela Brancato, commander, 217th Air Operations Group at Battle Creek Air National Guard Base and spouse to the 127th Wing Commander, Brig. Gen. Matthew Brancato, expressed her enthusiasm for the revamped program and its potential impact on the Selfridge community.

"The Key Spouse and Volunteer Program plays a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging and support for our military families,” she said. “This expansion allows us to harness the diverse skills and experiences of a broader group, overall strengthening the readiness of our team."

The history of the program dates back to its inception as the Air Force Key Spouse Program, where it primarily focused on providing support and resources to the spouses of service members. Over the years, the program has evolved to recognize the varied needs of military families, leading to this recent expansion.

Benefits of the Key Spouse and Volunteer Program include access to a network of individuals who can provide support to military personnel during times of deployment, times of need, or other life changes. The program also facilitates the exchange of information, resources, and experiences among military families, fostering a sense of community and resilience.

Individuals interested in joining the program or learning more about its initiatives can email SelfridgeKeySpouse@gmail.com or attend informational sessions held regularly on the base. The revamped program seeks to create a more dynamic and inclusive community support structure, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility in the well-being of military families.
